UW Montlake Medical Center

As a key member of a progressive-design build team, Walker Macy is leading the redesign of the site for the UW Montlake Medical Center. The project includes the full removal and replacement of the hospital’s street frontage and 2 acres of outdated on-structure landscape, driven by the need for a new waterproofing system and more sustainable on-structure open spaces. The project also improves the identity and function of this nationally-recognized, public teaching hospital by integrating it with the campus and city. The project improves the arrival experience for people driving, walking, and biking, provides safe and efficient zones for passenger loading and daily lab deliveries, and offers welcoming courtyards that support patients, visitors, staff, students, and faculty. These courtyards mitigate the imposing scale of the building and create comfortable, human-scale spaces for rest, relaxation, and healing. Their design is inspired by the drama of the adjacent Rainier Vista, with inviting landscape features that are rich with natural material, texture, and planting. The project prioritizes universal accessibility as well as safety and comfort for all users.
