Portland Japanese Garden: Cultural Crossing

Walker Macy, in collaboration with Garden Curator Sadafumi Uchiyama, Kengo Kuma Associates, and Hacker, developed a significant expansion to the Portland Japanese Garden. This project transformed one of Portland’s most significant landmarks into a world-class setting for cultural exchange and education of the arts and culture of Japan. The striking landscape architectural design also addresses the site’s complex environmental conditions. Strategies included low-profile, sustainably manufactured green roof systems from Japan, and buildings and stormwater infrastructure were sited to minimize impacts to an existing landslide fault that bisects the site.
