Walker Macy was part of a team of planners, engineers and economists developing a subarea plan for 447 acres on Hood River’s growing west side, an evolving mixed-use area adjacent to the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area. Our work focused on the area’s urban design, addressing key physical frameworks for the livability of the Westside: neighborhoods and districts; streets; pedestrian and bicycle connections; and parks and open spaces. Work included development of prototypical housing community plans, a trail and bike system, open spaces that support community gathering and a connection to nature, and neighborhood design principles that celebrate the landforms, views, natural legacy, and magnificent landscape of Hood River. Our work in the Westside area continued with a feasibility study for an important public open space park for the Hood River Valley Parks and Recreation District which will provide a variety of recreational opportunities for the increasing population.
