Walker Macy’s work on the Japan Institute, a new satellite campus for the Portland Japanese Garden, is featured in Landscape Architecture Magazine’s December 2022 issue. The design team includes project lead designer and the Portland Japanese Garden’s Chief Curator Sadafumi Uchiyama and Kengo Kuma and Associates, who together led the work on Cultural Crossing, the garden’s award-winning 2017 expansion. The team has reunited to design this highly specialized working campus that will house a series of new and expanded educational programs such as the International Japanese Garden Training Center. The campus is being designed with consideration of Japanese design principles to create a thoughtfully organized and crafted space that emerges from its context and existing conditions. Design development is currently underway for the project and construction is expected to begin in mid-2023.
