The City of Hillsboro and Metro joined forces to redevelop a defunct golf course into a new 44-acre public open space, blending neighborhood park elements into a new nature park. Trails, overlooks, and play areas will facilitate maximum enjoyment of the site’s natural characteristics while minimizing impacts to the ongoing restoration of the creek, tree groves, and meadows. The design invites users from a domesticated, neighborhood park and play area at the site’s edge, to increasingly wild landscapes leading into Rock Creek in the heart of the site. Evocative, interactive play sculptures at key locations in the park, the “Seeds of Orenco”, beckon exploration and evoke the site’s historic origins as the Oregon Nursery Company’s apple orchard.
