Following the establishment of the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area, public and private organizations began a long process of creating public access and restoring the stunning landscapes of the Gorge. A series of concentric circles blending into the basalt bluffs, perched 2,840 feet above the Columbia River, the Nancy Russell Overlook restores a degraded site and offers panoramic views of the Gorge. The overlook honors Nancy Russell, a lifelong advocate for public spaces throughout the National Scenic Area who was instrumental in preserving this site for public access and environmental restoration. Russell led the acquisition of the private housing subdivision on the site, which was subsequently demolished, and the landscape was restored as an exemplary Gorge native landscape.
