King Street Station

In continuation of the firm’s work on the Pioneer Square Parks and Gateways Concept Study, Walker Macy developed a conceptual design for multiple public open spaces, including King Street Station Plaza. This highly visible but underutilized public plaza sits at an important regional transportation hub and a nexus of neighborhoods. The concept design for a ‘Railway Park,’ was inspired by the railroad’s formative role in transforming Pioneer Square from a tidal marsh into a cross-continental gateway. Small gathering areas are set within gardens, and movable tables and chairs provide open, flexible seating throughout the plaza. A rotating turntable displays the historic tidelands map and functions as informal seating, play platform, and event stage. A shade canopy provides comfort in the summer, and is intended to support lighting and art installations throughout the year. The new design is intended to invite visitors into the space, reconnect King Street Station to the district and provide a sense of arrival into Seattle.
